Running, Stopped and open positions
What happens to existing positions when you Stop a repeater, pause a follower account or use Flatten.
Stopping copying and closing a position are separate actions. An open position remains at the broker until it is closed. The repeater state and each position's close protection determine whether Trepeat mirrors a source close.
Running
A Running repeater copies eligible new source trades to its unpaused follower accounts using its settings. Source closes are mirrored to the linked follower positions that are eligible for automatic closing. Positions protected by an earlier Stop, leave open remain outside automatic closing even after you select Run.
Stopped
A Stopped repeater copies no new trades and does not mirror source closes onto its existing follower positions. Stop does not close positions. You are responsible for closing anything left open. Accounts may disconnect when no Running repeater needs them. Trepeat cannot close a position while its account is disconnected: close it at the broker, or run a repeater again to reconnect the account and use Flatten.
Follower-paused
Pausing a follower account affects that follower on the repeater; other follower accounts can continue copying. The paused follower receives no new opens and no automatic closes of existing positions. A source close during the pause is not mirrored onto that follower while it is paused. You can close those positions yourself.
Resuming the follower removes close protection created by that pause, making those existing positions eligible for automatic closing again while the repeater is Running — for source closes that happen from then on. A position whose source closed while the follower was paused, or during downtime, is not closed later by Trepeat: nothing closes a position in the background. It is reported as an alert and you close it yourself, with Flatten or at the broker. Resuming does not remove protection created by Stop, leave open. New opens missed while the follower was paused are not copied retroactively.
A copy that merged with a position of your own
On a netting follower the broker keeps one position per symbol, so a copy placed on a symbol you already hold does not open its own position — it merges into yours. The surviving position is then partly the copy and partly your trade.
When the source closes, Trepeat will not close that position. It only ever closes positions it opened, and this one is no longer solely its own: closing it would close your trade along with the copy. Instead it says so — an alert names the symbol and the account, the row on the Trades page reads close attempted with the time on hover, and the position stays open for you to close, in whole or in part, at your broker.
Trepeat warns at the moment the merge is about to happen as well, so the alert after the close is not the first you hear of it. Keeping one open position per symbol on a netting account, or using a hedging account for the repeater, avoids the situation entirely.
Flatten versus Stop
- Stop changes the repeater state. It does not send a close order.
- Flatten requests closure of the selected open positions at their brokers. It needs connected accounts; a close request can fail. It also declines, deliberately, to close a position that holds more than the copy Trepeat placed — on a netting account your copy merges into a position you already hold, or into a copy from another of your trades, and closing it would close that too. Those are reported as left untouched rather than closed, an alert says what the position merged with, and the row shows close attempted with the time on hover.
- Flatten and stop in the Stop confirmation requests closure of the displayed open positions across source and follower accounts, then stops the repeater. It is not a follower-only action. It follows the same rule as Flatten: a merged netting position is left untouched, with an alert saying so.
Flatten and stop still stops the repeater if some or all close requests fail. Read the result and check for remaining positions at the broker. A Stopped badge is not evidence that every position closed.
What “Stop, leave open” means afterward
This choice leaves the positions open and marks eligible existing follower positions for manual closing. Their source closing later does not automatically close them. Running the repeater again does not undo that choice. Run allows new copies and can reconnect the accounts, but those protected positions still require you to close them at the broker or explicitly use Flatten when connected.
Pause-only protection and Stop, leave open protection are distinct. In particular, positions already protected by a follower pause keep their pause protection rather than being re-marked by Stop. Resuming that follower clears its pause-only protection; it does not clear any separate Stop, leave open marks.
The Stop confirmation temporarily protects eligible follower positions while you choose an action. Cancel rolls back the Stop confirmation's protection so normal close mirroring can resume; it preserves any protection from a follower pause.
