Connecting a MetaTrader account

The three details MetaTrader needs, how they are stored, and why only demo accounts connect.

A MetaTrader account connects with the same three details your terminal uses: the account number, its password and the broker's server. Trepeat signs in with them the way a second terminal would, so nothing is installed on your machine and nothing runs on your computer.

What you need

  • The account number — the login your broker issued.
  • The account password — the trading password, not an investor password. An investor password is read-only and cannot place orders, so a copy would never be sent.
  • The server name exactly as your broker writes it, for example ICMarketsEU-Demo.

The server name is the detail most often wrong. It is shown in your terminal beside the account and usually ends in -Demo. A wrong server produces a connection failure rather than a wrong account, so a failed connection is worth re-checking here first.

Demo accounts only

Trepeat connects demo accounts. This is not only a rule in the interface: the database itself refuses to record a live account as connected, so a live login cannot be used even if it is entered. Evaluation and funded accounts from proprietary trading firms generally run on demo servers, which is what Trepeat connects.

How the credentials are stored

The password is held encrypted in Supabase Vault and is never shown again after you enter it. Trepeat uses it to open the broker connection and for nothing else. If you change the password at your broker, the saved one stops working and the account reports a failed connection — enter the new one on the account to fix it.

After it connects

The account appears on your Accounts page with its balance, equity and status. It is not copying anything yet: an account is only a connection. Copying starts when the account is the source or a follower of a repeater and that repeater is Running.

Connecting a second platform works differently, because cTrader does not use a stored password at all — see Connecting a cTrader account.
