How it is calculated

The gain it takes to get back

The deeper the drawdown, the faster the gain needed grows. This holds for any account size.

Drawdown calculator: common questions

How do I calculate drawdown?

Drawdown % = (peak − trough) ÷ peak × 100. An account that fell from 10,000 to 8,000 is in a 20% drawdown.

Why does recovering take a bigger gain than the loss?

The gain is worked on what is left, which is smaller. After a 50% drawdown the account needs a 100% gain to reach its peak again. The formula is (peak − trough) ÷ trough × 100.

What is the difference between a daily and a trailing limit?

A daily limit is measured down from a figure set at the start of the day, and it resets. A trailing limit is measured down from the highest figure so far, so it moves up as that high rises. Type your own limit in the matching mode.

Does this use my firm's or broker's rule?

No. It knows no firm's rules. It does the sum on the figures you type. Rules differ on balance or equity, when a day starts, and whether a trailing limit stops rising at some level, so check the wording of your own.

Should I type a limit as a percentage?

Type it as an amount. A 5% limit on 100,000 is 5,000, but rules differ on what the percentage is taken from, so work it out from the figure your rule names.
