(1.1040 − 1.1000) ÷ (1.1000 − 1.0980) = +2.00R

Risk: price distance ÷ tick size × tick value × size.

R-multiple calculator: common questions

What is an R-multiple?

A trade's result divided by what its stop risked. If the stop risked 200 and the trade made 400, the result is +2R. A trade stopped out exactly is −1R. R lets you compare trades of different sizes.

How do I calculate R?

On a long, R = (exit − entry) ÷ (entry − stop). On a short, R = (entry − exit) ÷ (stop − entry). The calculator reads the direction from where you put the stop: below the entry is a long, above it is a short.

How is a partial close counted?

Each part is weighted by its share of the position. Half closed at +1R and the rest at +3R is (50% × 1R) + (50% × 3R) = +2R for the whole trade.

What are tick size and tick value?

The smallest price step your broker counts, and what that step is worth on one lot or contract. Both are in the symbol's specification on most platforms. Leave them empty if you only need R.

Can a loss be worse than −1R?

Yes. If a fill lands past the stop, the loss is larger than the stop risked, so the result is beyond −1R. Type the price you really got out at.
