Profit factor calculator: common questions

What is profit factor?

Gross profit divided by gross loss. If your winning trades made 300 in total and your losing trades lost 200, profit factor is 1.50. Above 1 means the list made more than it lost; below 1 means the opposite.

What can I paste in?

A column from any spreadsheet or statement, or numbers you type. One number per line is safest. Spaces, tabs, commas and semicolons also separate. It reads $120, (80), −80, 1,234.50, 12,5 and 1.5R. Anything else is reported as unread and left out.

Should the results include costs?

Yes, if you want the figure to match what the account really did. Use each trade's result after commission and swap, in R or in money, but not a mix of the two.

What is the longest losing run?

The most losses in a row, in the order you typed them, so keep the list in the order the trades closed. A trade that closed flat ends a run.

Why does it say no losses?

Profit factor divides by gross loss. A list with no losing trades has nothing to divide by, so no figure exists. It is usually a sign of a short list.
